The following section introduces the current performance of insecticidal lamps in terms of safety, operational efficiency, and automated control technology.
(1) Safety of Insecticidal Lamps
The safety of insecticidal lamps encompasses both the intrinsic safety of the lamp itself—ensuring it remains undamaged during operation, such as from lightning strikes or rain that might cause short circuits and burn out components and the lamp housing—and the operational safety of the lamp—ensuring that the insect-killing grid does not inadvertently injure humans or livestock and that no electric shock accidents occur. To ensure that insecticidal lamps operate safely and efficiently, a variety of measures must be implemented to minimize safety risks to the lowest possible level. These include protection against lightning strikes, prevention of short circuits in the high-voltage insect-killing grid caused by rain or dew, safeguarding against accidental injury to humans and livestock from the high-voltage grid, and preventing electric leakage from the lamp that could lead to electric shock—all of which are fundamental requirements that insecticidal lamps must meet.
National Standard GB/T 24689.2-2009, “Plant Protection Machinery—Frequency-Vibration Insecticidal Lamps,” states: “7.3.3… When the humidity is adjusted to greater than 95% RH, the lamp shall automatically enter a protective state.” Currently, most high-performance insecticidal lamps comply with this standard: when the ambient humidity exceeds 95% RH, in order to prevent short-circuiting and damage to electronic components as well as spark-induced burnout of the lamp housing caused by the high-voltage insect-killing grid, the humidity sensor triggers the lamp to shut down automatically and enter a self-protection mode, thereby ensuring the safe operation of the device.
(2) Efficiency of Insecticidal Lamps
The operational efficiency of an insecticidal lamp is primarily determined by the performance of its attractant light source and the degree of temporal overlap between the lamp’s operating hours and the activity period of the target pests. Once the attractant light source has been selected, the extent to which the lamp’s operating schedule aligns with the pests’ activity patterns becomes the decisive factor in enhancing the lamp’s overall effectiveness.
Insecticidal lamps that comply with the national standard GB/T 24689.2-2009, “Plant Protection Machinery—Vibration-Frequency Insecticidal Lamps,” often cease operation during periods of high humidity but no rainfall—such as when relative humidity exceeds 95% RH without precipitation, when air humidity remains high after rain has stopped, or when dew begins to form—despite the fact that many pests are highly active under these conditions. This shutdown compromises the lamp’s operational efficiency by failing to protect its own safety. Conversely, if a high-voltage insect-killing grid were to continue operating safely even during rainfall, it would be counterproductive: pests generally become inactive in rainy weather, resulting in wasted energy; moreover, solar-powered insecticidal lamps would see their ability to maintain continuous, normal operation during extended periods of overcast and rainy conditions significantly reduced, thereby lowering overall efficiency.
(3) Automatic Control Technology for Insecticidal Lamps and Safe, Efficient Automated Control Systems
1. The essence of automated control technology for insecticidal lamps
To ensure the safe and efficient operation of insecticidal lamps, higher requirements are placed on their automatic control technology. Automatic control of insecticidal lamps encompasses two aspects: operational control and safety control.
(1) Operational control: This includes automatic switching on and off as required by the task, as well as automatic charging and discharging of the solar-powered insecticidal lamp’s power supply system under normal operating conditions.
(2) Safety Controls: These include protection against lightning strikes, prevention of short circuits in the high-voltage insect-killing net caused by rain and dew, prevention of accidental injury to humans and livestock from the high-voltage insect-killing net, and prevention of electric shock accidents due to leakage current from the insect-killing lamp…
2. Safe, Efficient, and Automated Control System for Insecticidal Lamps
In response to the inherent conflict between safety and operational efficiency in the use of insecticidal lamps under current national standards, Yangzhou Kanghong Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. has developed a safe, efficient, and automated control system for such lamps. This system integrates an electronic control subsystem with a physical control subsystem to provide dual-layer protection, ensuring that lamp operation remains synchronized with pest activity. As a result, the system not only guarantees the safe operation of the lamps but also maximizes their efficiency, extending their continuous operating time even during prolonged periods of overcast and rainy weather. Consequently, the overall efficiency and safety of insecticidal lamps are significantly enhanced.
